E.T. for World President!

If things got really bad — down here on “mostly harmless” planet earth — could we rely on extraterrestrial neighbors to bail us out?

Last week’s, just-for-laughs, post (Roswell Crash and Politician’s Birthdays) seemed well received. In all seriousness, getting man out of his complex global mess may come down to alien intervention…

In fact, one of the senior monks of Paramhansa Yogananda told me that the great yoga teacher predicted alien intervention might become necessary to save humanity. Sort of God’s hand working in an “inconspicuous” way. Particularly, in the case of an out-of-control nuclear war.

Probably not the first time.

Couple that with all the predictions about a major shift for life on earth coming around 2012…

• The Mayan calendar began with the Fifth Great Cycle in 3114 BC and will end on 21 December 2012 AD ( www.en.wikipedia.org).

• Modern interpretations of the Hindu calendar, such as Swami Sri Yukteswarji’s in The Holy Science, say we entered the Dwapara Yuga (the Atomic Age – when man would break the secrets of the atom) in 1699. That means 2000 marked the exact beginning of the second quarter of the Atomic Age where we might shrug off our hangover from the previous Dark Age. Vedic science is based largely on the number 12, with major shifts happening every 12 years, positioning 2012 in for some transitions.

One of the major problems we seem to be facing in this “evolutionary hangover”: Technological advancement is exceeding moral advancement. You only have to look at the way world issues are coming to head to know something’s needs to change for the better…

• Financial Collapse: Global inflation, the collapse of the currency system and inescapable national debts (shouldn’t take much longer…) could slingshot us back to bartering pioneer days.

• Peak Oil: The end of cheap oil (expected sometime between 2010 and 2020 by many scientists) would mean the collapse of our present agriculture, manufacturing and transportation systems. Our grandchildren may never fly in an airplane.

• Corrupted Healthcare System: Escalating disease and ill health, despite modern advancements, will put an end to our current out-of-control and ineffective profit-based health care system.

• Environmental Stresses: A decreasing supply of clean water, global warming and pollution could cause major migration of people.

• Five Planets: Many environmentalists estimate North America alone consumes so much material resources that it would take five planets – not just our one – to keep up with demand.

When you consider the above factors, a change in course would be a positive thing. It definitely looks like something is coming. Its shadow is already upon us. The shadow of God’s hand reaching out to help us and steer us towards better ways.

I don’t deny it would be a horrific change. Peak oil alone could mean 5 billion people would die of hunger. I don’t welcome something like that. Not in the least. I do welcome, however, an end to a system that’s based on taking advantage of people and finite resources. We need to get back to basics for a while.

How will we overcome all these challenges without riots, starvation and war? It’s more than a simple matter of setting up solar panels, getting out of debt and eating local food. Major systems, machinery and infrastructure needs to be changed. If we wait until water, oil and resources are depleted, we’ll have nothing with which to power such change.

So, yes, I’m okay with the aliens coming down and helping out. I’ll vote for E.T. for World President, anyday. I’ll pass on Star Trek’s “Prime Directive,” thank you very much Mr. Roddenberry.
